Charge: To provide advice and counsel that assists in guiding, supporting and communicating Learning Technologies’ strategic aims at Virginia Tech.

The mission of Learning Technologies is to provide a teaching and learning infrastructure that meets modern needs for integrating technology across content areas. Drawing on expertise in both technology and pedagogy, the department seeks to create and support robust environments for learning, discovery, and engagement for faculty and students that are grounded in sound principles of learning and in a thorough knowledge of integrating technology for effectiveness and efficiency of effort. Learning Technologies seeks these aims in several ways:

• Through comprehensive development programs and training activities in the appropriate use of emerging technologies;
  
  
• Through systematic application of appropriate resources to designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating technology-assisted instruction; and
  
  
• By providing highly responsive services that advance and support technology-assisted learning, discovery, engagement, communication, and collaboration.

Committee Membership and Activity:

• Members will be invited to serve on the advisory committee by the Associate Vice President for Learning Technologies, with the committee’s size remaining small enough to encourage fluid interaction, discussion, and representation of a range of perspectives.
  
  
• Members will serve for two years with the possibility of reappointment and with staggered, rotating appointments that allow for continuity of operations and historical perspective.
  
  
• Members will meet approximately twice each semester to discuss Learning Technologies aims and challenges and will receive a request for agenda items prior to each meeting.
  
  
• Members may also meet approximately twice each year to discuss overarching aims and challenges related to the Office Of Information Technology’s goals at Virginia Tech. These meetings will offer opportunities for integrated discussions among the three advisory committees within the Office of Information Technology – Learning Technologies, Network Infrastructure and Services, and Enterprise Systems.
  
  
• Members may advise Learning Technologies and Information Technology where appropriate regarding such subjects as related services, facilities, resources and policies that further the effective use of learning technologies and related learning activities.
  
  
• Members may assist in encouraging university-wide information sharing and collaborative planning on challenges and issues related to learning technologies.

Ex Officio Participation:

Standing members of the committee shall include the Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education, Vice President and Dean for Graduate Education, Vice President for Outreach and International Affairs, Vice President for Research, and Executive Director of the National Capitol Region.

Staff Participation:

Learning Technologies’ senior staff will participate in committee meetings with all other staff available to contribute as needed.
